Just when you thought the stakes in the Middle East couldn’t get much higher, the whole picture just got a little more complicated. Israel may be in the process of becoming an oil producing nation.
In addition to large pools of natural gas off shore, it is possible that Israel is sitting on oil reserves equal to approximately 3.53 billion barrels which equates to an amount approximately equal to one seventh of Qatar’s proven reserves.
Givot Olam, an Israeli Oil Exploration company, has announced that it has located reserves at its Meged 5 site which are much larger than previous estimates.
A factor that stands to make things a bit troublesome is the Green Line and potential Palestinian claims to the resources. The well is located upon the Green Line, which is the armistice line of 1948 that formally separates Israel for the occupied Palestinian territories.
The last thing that was needed in this state and this part of the world was another point of contention. They got one anyway.
